our approach
West Architecture Studio knows that the best projects result from close collaboration with our clients – that’s why we strive to listen and discuss our client’s goals extensively before beginning to put pen to paper. Only once we have a full understanding - not only of project goals but our client’s specific needs, personal tastes, and overall goals - do we attempt to interpret these into a graceful, lasting work of architecture.
stylistics
West Architecture Studio designs buildings that are definitively contemporary, yet follow classic architectural ideas about proportion and detail that allow projects to age gracefully over time giving them a certain independence from “of-the-moment” style and trend. We respect the origins of the classic “modernist box” but prefer to add warmth, texture, and detail that make for unique and inviting spaces – often through simplicity of form, judicious use of natural materials, and simple but interesting textures - that counter the sterility often seen in many contemporary designs. Although the majority of our work could probably be qualified as contemporary or modern, we prefer not to be pigeonholed as such and are equally comfortable and adept at more transitional styles such as mid-century modern renovations, historical or industrial re-concepts, restrained traditional, farmhouse modern, etc. In fact, we are constantly seeking projects that may challenge us in to seek an unusual and rewarding balance between the traditional and contemporary architectural worlds. As long as it involves a commitment to good design on the part of our clients, we are likely interested in being involved.
gesamtkunstwerk
Gesamtkunstwerk (German pronunciation: [gə.ˈzamtˌku̇nstˌveɐ̯k], translated as total work of art, ideal work of art, universal artwork, synthesis of the arts, comprehensive artwork, all-embracing art form or total artwork) is a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms or strives to do so.
Paramount to the West Architecture Studio design ethic is a holistic approach with unparalleled consideration, attention-to-detail, and seamless coordination of both interior design and landscape design with the architecture – items that can often seem to be trivial afterthoughts with many architects. People often comment on how integrated and balanced all aspects of our projects feel. And this isn’t simply by chance occurrence - we work hard to insure that each project is a well-thought-out and integrated work and strive to deliver to highest level of design possible for any given budget.
green building
With all the recent attention to living greener, it can be difficult to discern what is truly green from what is “green-washing” - what is truly added value to our environment and lives and what is just another marketing gimmick. West Architecture Studio is a member of the US Green Building Council and strives to incorporate cutting-edge green technology but we believe that many green building aspects, especially those with little or no additional cost, should simply be part of everyday good design. We take pride in educating our clients about all aspects of green building but attempt to strike a balance between features that truly add value and those that are simply an extravagant expense with little actual return to the client or the environment.
